Next week sees the return of fan favourite the Great British Bake Off to our screens. It is the ninth series of the show, which started life on BBC Two on 17 August 2010. Following a strong and successful start on BBC Two, where the first episode drew 2 million viewers, the programme’s fourth series was moved to a primetime slot on BBC One on account of its popularity. During the second series, it averaged 4 million viewers per episode and the last fifteen minutes of the final were viewed by 5.1 million people. After three series on BBC One, producers Love Productions signed a three-year deal with Channel 4, where it has appeared since 2017 and has return this week. The Great British Bake Off is said to have reinvigorated the nation’s interest in baking and even the Women’s Institute.
This year’s series, the tenth in the programme’s history, will be presented by Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig and adjudicated by returning judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith. Thirteen bakers, aged from 20 to 56, will compete against each other in an attempt to impress the judges with their baking skills. Each week, one amateur baker will be eliminated from the competition and the winner will be chosen from the group who reaches the finals. The contestants this year include a veterinary surgeon, a fashion designer, an HGV driver, an international health adviser and a geography teacher, with each of them representing various parts of the UK.
Over the past decade, the Great British Bake Off has received nominations for and numerous television awards, multiple times and across various different categories. These include the National Television Awards and the BAFTA and BAFTA TV awards, which it has won a total of four times.
Sporting beautiful baby bumps, beaming smiles and the radiant glow of pregnancy, the three Coronation Street starlets of past and present, Brooke Vincent, Julia Goulding and Hayley Tamaddon, stood proudly posing for a photo shared by Hayley on her Instagram page. “UCH an amazing day @gardenspawarrington, here’s me @brookelevivincent @julia_goulding proudly showing off our baby bumps! We had the best pregnancy massage and came away feeling so relaxed and happy,” wrote the former Coronation Street actress, alongside the shared snap.
The snap of the excited trio comes after quite an eventful year in the lives of all three. Brooke Vincent, 27, who has played Sophie Webster on-screen since 2004, was the first to announce her pregnancy. The gushing first-time mother to be excitedly shared news of her joy in an exclusive with OK! Magazine. Discovering she was in the fifth week of her pregnancy upon testing, the Corrie star exclusively told the magazine of her initial shock and the shock of her boyfriend, Sheffield United footballer, Kean Bryan, 22. She appeared in a glittering gold dress at The British Soap Awards, proudly showing off her beautiful baby bump.
Hayley Tamaddon has been the most vocal on social media in showing her excitement during her pregnancy. The 42-year old former Corrie and Dancing On Ice star has revealed her battles with infertility and how she was told she would never be able to conceive, with news of the pregnancy coming as a most pleasant surprise to her and her boyfriend, Alan. Julia Goulding, 34, was the last of the trio to announce her pregnancy, in May. Having played Andrea Beckett in the soap, between 2013 and 2015, Julia played an important part in headline-grabbing storylines. Her and husband, Ben Silver, were married in an intimate ceremony at Manchester Albert Hall, in December 2018
Now that it’s all over and done with, the sparks, the spats and the spellbinding magic of the island sun have all settled, here we take a look back at the characters and highlights that made the show’s fifth season the resounding success that this year’s Love Island proved to be, with a series average of 5.61 million viewers! This year, controversy was stoked early on with the untimely departure of Sherif from the villa, after a mere 9 days into the series, Sherif was booted off the show in what were quite mysterious circumstances at the time. Following that, with the nation glued to the screen, Amber Gill gradually rose to centre stage, eventually taking this year’s title as Queen of the Villa!
Having received 48.82% of the final vote, Amber Gill and Greg O’Shea were crowned winners and split the £50,000 cash prize. The couple reportedly spent the early period of their return to the outside together, enjoying their split winnings. Insisting that the couple are avoiding the “official” label, it has since emerged that Amber will be flying out to meet Greg’s parents. She has also received many offers, from starring in her first appearance on one of her favourite shows Loose Women on Wednesday the 14th of August, the former beautician has also landed a place on Dancing On Ice in 2020.
After an initial pairing with Callum, Amber pursued her next encounter with Anton Danyluk, on platonic bases, having admitted that both Tommy and Joe had caught her eye. Coupling with Michael at the next recoupling, sparks slowly emerged between the pair. What seemed to be a strong bond made the pair early favourites to win the show. However, Michael’s dabblings with new arrival Joanna Chimonides stirred the storm of Amber’s heartbreak. With only two weeks left to go, Greg entered as a bombshell, immediately taking Amber on a date in The Hideaway. The pair hit it off, stayed strong and the rest, as they say, is history!
